A River Runs Through It

Gliding down a peaceful waterway sounds like an idyllic way to see a country. Fodor's is giving away an 8-day Viking River Cruise in their To Europe! Sweepstakes. Your Rhine Getaway starts in Amsterdam and winds through Kinderdijk, Cologne, Koblenz, Rüdesheim, Heidelberg, Speyer, and Breisach. If you're a Francophile, take an excursion to the quaint Alsatian town of Colmar, France, which is the home of the sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi, who designed the Statue of Liberty. Be sure to visit la Petite Venise, or "little Venice," the area crossed by canals of the river Lauch, which formerly served as the butcher's, tanner's and fishmonger's quarter. Since Colmar is considered the capitale des vins d'Alsace (the capital of Alsatian wine), you may want to pick up a few bottles for the rest of your trip. Then, cruise to Basel and disembark. You can always head to Paris when you're done. Paddle on over and enter.
